Natural Toothpaste Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp bentonite clay
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil (melted)
  • 1 tsp neem powder
  • ½ tsp clove powder
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil (food-grade)
  • 1 tsp xylitol powder (optional)
  • Filtered water (as needed for consistency)

Instructions

  1. Combine Powders
In a non-metallic bowl, mix bentonite clay, baking soda, neem, clove, and xylitol (if using).
  2. Add Coconut Oil
Slowly stir in melted coconut oil until a paste starts to form.
  3. Add Peppermint Oil
Drop in the essential oil and mix thoroughly.
  4. Adjust Texture
Add a few drops of filtered water at a time until you get your desired toothpaste consistency.
  5. Store
Transfer to a glass jar with a lid. Use a clean spoon or spatula to apply to your toothbrush.

Tips & Variations

  • Add activated charcoal (¼ tsp) for whitening—use no more than 2–3 times per week.
  • For a child-safe version, reduce peppermint oil to 2–3 drops and skip xylitol.
  • Add 1 tsp of calcium carbonate powder for remineralization.
  • Avoid metal bowls or utensils—bentonite clay may lose its detoxifying properties when in contact with metal.

Ingredient Notes: Neem Alternatives

If neem powder is unavailable, substitute it with 1 teaspoon of one of the following:

  • Miswak powder – For strong antibacterial and plaque-fighting action
  • Guava leaf powder – Helps with bleeding gums and freshens breath
  • Tulsi (holy basil) powder – Soothes sensitive gums, antimicrobial
  • Myrrh powder – Astringent and healing for inflamed gums
